How to Overcome Bad Habits

Breaking a bad habit

We all have those habits that we just can’t seem to break. Maybe it’s going on your phone right before bed, or even snacking when you aren’t even hungry. Whatever it is, it may seem personal to you, but you are not alone. There are many other people that also can’t seem to break these same bad habits.

We know it can be challenging to break these habits and we are here to help. That is why we have come up with some ways you can begin to break some of these bad habits you might have.

Avoid Tempting Situations

Our first and number one tip that we have is to avoid any tempting situations or triggers.  For example, you might want to stop looking at ] your phone throughout the day. In order to avoid the tempting situation, start by placing your phone in another room. If that doesn’t work, try turning your phone off entirely. If that doesn’t work, you can even give it to someone else to hold. In the end, one of the best tips is to do whatever you can to get the temptation away from you.

Replace Unhealthy with Healthy

When you take out a bad habit from your routine, you might feel a little off or like something is missing. To combat this feeling, try adding a healthy habit in your routine to replace the bad one. For example, if you are tempted to snack throughout the day, go on a walk or do a short exercise when you feel tempted. If you tend to look at your phone right before bed, try reading a book instead. Whatever it is for you, make sure you are replacing that habit with a healthy one that you feel is right and works for you. The more you distract yourself with the new healthy habit, the easier it will be to get rid of the old and bad ones.

Work Towards Rewards

Rewards are a great way to give yourself an incentive. There are so many different things you can do to make it fun to quit that bad habit you’ve been trying to give up. Make sure it is something you really want to work towards. Don’t allow yourself to cheat and make sure you don’t reward yourself early.

There might be rewards for short term progress as well. This can help you stay on track. Also, have a larger reward in the end that you are working towards.

Give Yourself Grace

Be kind to yourself, and trust that you are doing your best. It can be easy to get defeated and throw in the towel even when you mess up for just one day.

Yet, this is one of the most crucial times. This is the time when you really have to dig deep. You have to tell yourself that even though you messed up that one time, you are still capable of breaking that bad habit.
