Named in honor of Samuel Granville Smith, a former state senator and Tennessee’s Secretary of State, Smithville was founded in 1838. Smithville is the county seat of DeKalb County and began from a donation of 50 acres made by Bernard Richardson.
Today Smithville is home to the Appalachian Center for Craft. The Center has fine craft studios offering degree concentrations in clay, fibers, glass, metals and wood as well as one-day, weekend and week-long workshops for a variety of skill levels.
