A customer service representative was asked why he was in such a good mood. His reply? “I woke up this morning without a toe tag and thought I’d make a day of it.”
We all want to be treated with kindness and respect. However, it’s not always easy to give out what we crave the most. Maybe you got up to find that the coffee pot has overflowed, one of the kids is sick, the car won’t start or TRAFFIC! All these things lead down the same road to “Badmoodville.”
When one or all of these things happen you may find it hard to be nice. It’s not even really a conscious decision, it just happens. You snap at your co-workers or you’re impatient with a customer. You are caught in a downward spiral and can’t seem to escape.
But there is a way to escape. You can stop and take a few minutes to breathe and do a few simple things that can stop the bad day from continuing. Life is all about perspective.
Here are some ideas to help you get out of the downward spiral:
- Make a phone call. Talking to a good friend to get a few minutes of support and encouragement can make all the difference.
- Exercise. The release of endorphins can take away some negative energy.
- Listen to music. Nothing like a good tune to get you tapping your feet without even realizing it.
When you stop the progression of the bad mood, you may find it easier to give a compliment or just open a door for someone, giving them a smile. So stop, breathe, relax. You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel.
