We use our eyesight from the moment we wake up until the moment we go to sleep every night. Getting regular eye exams is one great way to maintain your eye health—but there are other easy ways you can take care of your eyes on a daily basis.
Watch Your Screen Time
Looking at screens for too long can tire out your eyes and lead to eye strain. If your job requires you to look at a screen for long periods of time, keeping your screen at arm’s length from you and taking short breaks from looking at it every 20 minutes are a couple of simple ways to lessen the stress on your eyes.
Wear Sunglasses Outside
We wear sunscreen to protect our skin from UV rays, so why don’t we always take the same care to protect our eyes? The sun’s rays can damage your eyes over time, but luckily you can help block the sun by wearing sunglasses. Polarized lenses can also help reduce glare — and they look pretty cool!
Eat a Healthy Diet
Maintaining your eye health is as easy as maintaining your overall health. All you have to do is eat well! Leafy greens, fish, citrus, oysters, pork and non-meat proteins all contain important nutrients that contribute to healthy eyes.
Don’t Rub Your Eyes
If you feel like there’s something in your eye, try to resist the urge to rub it! Although it’s tempting, rubbing your eyes can damage your cornea and harm your eyesight. Try using saline instead to flush out whatever may be bothering you.
There are multiple eye health issues that can arise from smoking cigarettes, like cataracts, uveitis and diabetic retinopathy. The risk of vision loss decreases substantially for non-smokers.
