Grow Old – But Don’t Feel Old

Morning Yoga

Growing old happens. You turn around one day and there are people around you that don’t know the songs you know, the movies you’ve seen, the events that have taken place in the world. And then you realize that you don’t feel as youthful as you once did. It’s been said, “If I’d known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.” Well, now is the time to start.

A study has shown that people are not only living longer, but are staying much healthier later in life. So what can you do to be one of these people living longer? Making just a few small changes can help you live longer. Start small. Self-care is important for a long, healthy life. Self-care is anything you do to avoid health problems. Here’s just a few things to help you get started:

  • Fruits and vegetables – eat at least three servings of fruits and vegetables a day to reduce your risk of heart disease possibly breast cancer.
  • Exercise – daily exercise is important not only to your body, but to your mental health as well.
  • Reduce stress – stress causes health problems such as high blood pressure, weight gain, depression, and much more. Reduce stress by meditating or taking a yoga class.
  • Get plenty of sleep – sleep is the way your body regulates and heals cells. A minimum amount of six hours is needed to achieve this goal.
  • Drink lots of water – staying hydrated is important in that every system in your body depends on water to flush toxins out of vital organs and carry nutrients to your cells.
  • Don’t smoke – quitting smoking increase your life expectancy and can even increase survival odds for those with diseases such as COPD and early lung cancer.

There are often health problems that run in your your family such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Acting on some of the aforementioned suggestions (and there are plenty more where these came from) can help reduce your chances of getting these illnesses.

Your employer also may offer healthy living benefits. At Advance Financial, we believe in the health and well-being of our employees. That’s why we offer benefits such as an annual health fair, reduced-fee YMCA membership, a track team that runs a 5k every month and company paid health insurance.

Taking care of your health is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Start today by walking the dog a few extra minutes, take a stroll at lunch, eat a piece of fruit instead of that candy. Don’t overwhelm yourself by doing too many things at once. Just do one thing different every day and soon you’ll be on the road to good health.
