With a population a little over 26,000, Bristol, TN is the principal city in the Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City area known as the Tri-Cities region. Bristol is located in Sullivan County.
When most people think about country music, they think about Nashville, TN, however, Bristol was the site of some of the first commercial recordings of country music. In 1998, the U.S. Congress recognized Bristol as the “Birthplace of Country Music,” where the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is located. Country music legend Tennessee Ernie Ford was born in Bristol, TN.
The Bristol Motor Speedway, a NASCAR short track, is located in the city and is also the site of the 2016 Battle at Bristol, pitting the University of Tennessee Volunteers against the Virginia Tech Hokie in September 10, 2016. With an attendance of 156,990 people, a new record was set for the highest attendance at a college football game.
